Elizabeth (“Liz”) Holmes is an interior designer, entrepreneur, law school graduate. She’s a problem-solver, sometime people-pleaser who believes if you spend 8 of 24 hours in a day sleeping, you’re doing something wrong. Street art, fashion, and architecture serve as a source of inspiration, edge, and flair that distinguishes her personal style and work.
 
While attending law school, Liz also worked as a communications director for a New York City Council member. She was a paralegal, lobbyist, and tenant liaison for a residential real estate firm. But designing the apartments and homes of friends and colleagues is where she found her voice. She later earned a certificate in Interior Design from the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
 
Liz brings a sharp, colorful, and edgy point-of-view to each of her designs, a savvy mind that’s attuned to her clients’ vision, and a resourceful drive to pull it all together.

In 2015 Elizabeth Holmes was featured on NBC's George to the Rescue and was named one of Newsday's All-Star Designers.

What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?

Black History Month has always been an opportunity to recognize and take pride in those African-Americans who have made significant contributions to our society. But for me, this year Black History Month is about responsibility. As a mother to a 5-year-old who is inquisitive and observant, I have a responsibility and an obligation to share with him a history that is as diverse as he is, and a history that is steeped in turbulent struggle and tremendous success. I also see this as a time to reflect on what I am doing personally, professionally, collectively, and as a part of a community to shape a lasting legacy for future generations. 

What Is On Trend For You?

Right now bold, exuberant and brightly colored textiles, textured lighting, and an unexpected mix of varying patterns on furnishings are on trend for me. Always on trend are interiors that are layered, luxe and look lived-in, i.e., as if its user acquired and collected personal objects, art, furniture, and statement-making pieces over a lifetime.

Tiisetso Dladla was born and raised in the vibrant city of Johannesburg South Africa. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in advertising and fine arts from Howard University. While living in Washington DC, Tiisetso worked on a series of mixed-media paintings depicting South African women in different eras. She was drawn to pursuing a career in film because of her passion for the arts and storytelling. She holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree in film production from New York University, Tisch School of The Arts.

She has written and directed several short films including: Unveil, Coach Fogan’s Swimming Class, In Dreams, Exiled, Cold War and Nehemiah. In 2011, Tiisetso was a recipient of the Spike Lee Production Fund Award for her short film, Nehemiah. She also received the Hollywood Foreign Press Association grant for Nehemiah. She has worked as an art director and scenic painter for Spike Lee’s production company, 40 Acres and A Mule Filmworks. Tiisetso is currently working on her debut feature film, a story adapted from a popular South African stage play.

What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?

This year, I have been inspired to research and learn about famous historical figures, and to also learn about my family history.  My family's story is as much apart of global black history, as the stories of the lives of historical black icons. Learning about my family history puts a new context on black history that I can relate to. The most interesting thing that I have learned this year is of the history of how World War One affected my family. My great–great-grandfather was a Canadian soldier that was stationed in Botswana during the war, and it was there that he met and started a family with my great-great-grandmother. Not much is told about the role Africans played duringWWI, but my family history has broadened the context I now know about it.

What Is On Trend Right Now For You?

On trend for me right now is modern African art.  I love when artists approach a traditional piece of functional art and put a fresh modern take on it. An example is a traditional Zulu basket, which was once used very practically for storing household items has been redesigned to be both decorative and functional in the home. It can be used as art to place on a mantel or functionally as a decorative fruit basket.

Lisa Smith-Craig better known, as LSC to her industry counterparts is a Fashion Stylist and Creative & Image Consultant whose work has been seen in publications such as Zink, Elle, FashionTV, Fault, Relapse, Noi.se, Factice to name a few. LSC also has styled talents such as Ashanti, Teyana Taylor, Tinashe, Keshia Chante, VH1 Girl Code‘s Tanisha Long,  VH1 Love & Hip Hop Atlanta’s Ariane Davis, Fox Empire’s AzMarie Livingston etc. as well as professional athletes and product lines. Currently, she is the Creative Director for Laurel DeWitt Designs and works as Wardrobe Stylist for various awards shows.

Most days, LSC can be found in the chic midtown office she and partner WNBA superstar Cappie Pondexter share, while running their image development firm 4Season Style Management. When asked about her personal motivation behind 4Season, LSC states “I wanted to bring all of my experiences together to create a story for others. I realized my experiences in retail, visual merchandising, styling and music, have all been put to use in helping develop cutting edge imagery for successful media”.

What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?

Black History Month is a time of reflection, discovery and self-awareness. It’s a platform to acknowledge contributions and achievements of our Black ancestors past and present and to me it is time to rejuvenate new energy and inspiration for our future growth as a community.

Expressing individualism is in!!!  Having fun with style trends by mixing and matching, patterns and textures, soft and hard edges, fringe and netting is on trend this Spring and I predict will show up in Fall fashions as well.

I have established my own signature look for the way that I dress and I find ways to incorporate trends into the style I have built for myself such as fringe, black and white and white. Although those trends are already staple in my wardrobe, it keeps me current when fashion designers choose to present as new ideas for each season.

Nicholas Ryan Gant is a New York singer/ song writer/ vocal composer from Phoenix, Arizona. His love for music was discovered in the church at an early age. Nicholas began cultivating his gift at age 13 through work with the world-renowned Phoenix Boys choir. Gant studied vocal performance and music composition at the Arizona school for the arts.  Nicholas then went on to further his musical studies at Howard University, where he received a Bachelor of Music in Classical Voice Performance. He has sung support vocals for likes of Ledisi, Miri Ben-Ari, Mariah Carey , Michael McDonald and Sy Smith.  Nicholas has been featured on projects all over the world including Germany, Poland, Belgium,  Denmark, London and Japan. He's also been featured on two projects by Zo! Of the Foreign Exchange. Nicholas released his first independent Project“Border Breaker” in 2009, and released his first full length album entitled “Promises” in 2011. His latest project MAZE, with producer Kriswontwo, is slated to be released April 1st, 2016.

I'm inspired by young people. I've worked in education and youth development for 6 years. The imagination of a young person is limitless. It helps me to continue dreaming and being fearless.

Everyday, I am blessed to plant my feet on the side of the bed, stand up and move forward is a reminder to those who have gone before.  Each day I feel the weight of ancestors who worked in fields, in the hot sun with less than meager earnings.  I’ve been blessed to be reminded to work harder, so those behind me will feel less of a weight in the future.  It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly.

Black History is important and necessary to me on a daily basis.  I cannot think of our experiences being limited to a mere 28 days.  29 every four years when its a leap year!  Ridiculous!  We are vibrant, educated, committed, strong, powerful and HERE everyday, every month, every hour!  Our roles and contributions cannot be reduced to a calendar month!

Awareness of Art, Architecture, Food, Travel and Culture are constants. More than any trend!  They are always there!

I'm obsessed with mixing patterns and textures! I believe your home should feel collected not decorated, and I love throwing the matchy matchy mindset out the window! My new mud cloth and wax print heart pillows are a great example. Mud cloth has a grounded sophistication to it while while wax print is often playful and vibrant. Mixing patterns and textures is a great way to create a space reflective of who you are which I'm all about.

With over twenty years of experience as a creative director, image-maker, conceptual thinker and designer, artist Lisa Hunt decided it was time to get back to what makes her happiest: creating art with her own hands. As someone who experiences the world fully through all of her senses, she gravitates toward materials with natural, tactile properties that appeal to both the eye and the touch. That attraction led her to launch her line of home decor with a collection of art prints (The Alchemy Collection) that play with the rhythmic repetition of graphic, geometric symbols and forms. Black Lives Matter! This year in particular I can’t help but think about the tragedy unfolding in Flint, Michigan. Throughout our history in this country we have been brutalized and marginalized and still the travesty, the blatant disregard for human life is hard to comprehend happening in 2016.  Last year, this year and next year I hope to never underestimate the breadth, power and beauty of our contributions to the world at large.

I am a first generation African-American.  My Ghanaian father and Ivorian mother always instilled in me a sense of pride in where I came from.  I was born in New Jersey and spent the majority of my life in the Washington DC area.  I understand the black experience in America. However, I also got the chance to live as an African living abroad during my primary school and high school years, and now again as an adult.  Black History Month is a time for me to reflect on how far we have come as black people; and also think about the journey of how we arrived here - both literally and figuratively.  I love connecting with the Diaspora, and being able to celebrate black excellence in all its forms around the world.  I use this month to reflect on our identify as catalysts for change, innovation and inspiration, all the while remaining deeply rooted in our heritage.  I wish more of the Diaspora could experience where they come from.  So many countries in Africa are unknown to travelers but there are a number of companies now working hard to present a more modern and authentic African travel experience like actress and producer Maame Adjei's Girl Going Places to tour planning companies like Tastemakers Africa and VisiterLAfrique.

Non-traditional shapes! A few African brands are leading the trend lately.   Llulo has amassed a huge following with their Africa-shaped cushions.  Priced at USD 62, the Ankara cushion is one that stands out as certified pillow porn, especially the limited edition leather option. Similarly, OT & O Rugs, an African-inspired brand out of London run by a mother-daughter team from Nigeria are selling truly unique carpets shaped like…people.  Talk about walking all over someone!  In the fashion world, brands like Okiki Marinho now available in the US at Shop Oasis NYC have remodeled the concept of the purse shape - introducing a distinct circular construction to their bags.

As it relates to groom styling, the color blue remains on trend.  Many gentlemen are opting for navy and true blue in lieu of standard black tuxedos or suits.  Dinner jackets made from materials with texture (including jacquard, brocade, etc.) are also quite popular.

Andrea Pippins is an artist and author with a background in graphic design. With her BFA in graphic design Andrea spent time designing professionally at Hallmark Cards and TV Land/Nick@ Nite Networks before returning to school to pursue her MFA at Temple University - Tyler School of Art. During her educational and professional careers her work has been published in well-known publications such as Anthology Magazine, Canadian House & Home, Colorlines.com, Creative Quarterly, CMYK, How Magazine, The Huffington Post, and Graphis New Talent. 

While she teaches part-time as an assistant professor of art at Maryland Institute College of Art, Andrea works as a freelance designer and illustrator (having designed for brands like Worth Global Style Network, Free People, Hallmark Cards and the BlackStar Film Festival) while producing content for her fashion, art and design blog, Fly. Andrea’s blog is a weekly resource to inspire young women to pursue their creative passions. 

In November 2015 Andrea’s first book, I Love My Hair, was published by Random House Children’s Books. I Love My Hair is a coloring book featuring her illustrations celebrating various hairstyles and textures. Andrea currently resides in Baltimore, MD.

I feel conflicted about Black History Month this year. On the one hand, it's a reminder of how much work needs to be done during the other 11 months to recognize the amazing work, talent, and perseverance of our people. On the other hand, it's always an inspiring time of the year to see so much going on (events, features, projects, etc.) celebrating our contributions.

What Is On Trend For You Right Now?

De-saturated color with futuristic/sci-fi vignettes that explore how toxicity influences/impacts humans and nature are on my radar. With technology evolving so quickly, and our environment being grossly transformed as a result; I think people are seeking inspiration on how we can all co-exist while still recognizing that some of the damage is irreversible. So I'm seeing a lot of nudes and pastels with weird pops of hazy color, and the contrast of metal (machines), skin, and earth.

For us this year, Black History Month is particularly important, because we are grateful for our first black President of the United States.  As Barack Obama ends his term in office, we are reflecting on what a joy it has been to see him and his family thrive, grow, and excel under the extreme scrutiny that comes with living in the White House.

What Is On Trend Right Now?

Currently, a pervasive trend for us, is fabricating custom-designed lacquered furniture for our clients.  As seen in the photos, we have a TV/Bookcase unit for a den, custom panels and cabinetry in a kitchen (in progress), and a console with polished nickel inlay, and a custom vanity for His Bath.  Also, we find gold plumbing fixtures to be quite on trend today (as shown), clients are gravitating towards gold accents in unexpected places.

This is one month of public celebration and using my design skills to celebrate all that we as Black people have contributed to the world. I don't limit it to American history either cause Black is Black, and we borrow and appropriate when we need to so why not give credit during this month as well.

On trend right now for me is holistic living, and getting the word out about it through transparent living. I practice what I preach. Everything I do is with a level of beauty inside and out every single day. Taking care of the self which allows the capacity to uplift others and shining bright as our birthright!

What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?

I feel like the universe has been preparing me to answer this question for the last year.  I almost don’t know where to begin. Though, what resonates at the forefront of my consciousness is the ability to define my own destiny and fulfill my deep desires. That is what this year’s Black History Month means to me. I have found my personal well of happiness in the work I choose to do because of the sacrifices of those who have come before me.  

When I reflect on the legacy of great activists in this country, I know that I cannot merely exist or just get through the day. Quite the contrary, I believe they shed sweat, blood and tears so that we cold cultivate in ourselves, the seeds of desire waiting to be touched by intention.

There is something so very special when what is usually considered the foundation of a room becomes the statement piece.  So, for Modular | Geometry’s first collection I am designing contemporary upholstered sofas and seating systems with graphic pattern and color – the types of pattern you would usually use for pillows and accessories.

Ashley Mason-Greene is a publicist in Washington DC who specializes in hospitality, food, beverage, retail, consumer and entertainment industries. She has made it her duty to eat and seek her way through the city (and any other city she visits) and can often be found brunching, discovering and uncovering on weekends. During the week, she’s more low key, probably with her nose in a book, scrolling through social media or en route to a spin class once she clocks out. After visiting Paris, London and South of France in the summer of 2015, she’s also often dreaming of her next travel destination.

What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?

I'm from a small town in Kentucky and I attended a historically black church that always celebrated Black History Month throughout the entire month. The church elders made sure we knew who we were and where we came from. Now that I've moved away, I always use the "extra marketing push" to educate others and continue to educate myself on the accomplishments of black people all around the world. It means so much to me to be a part of such a beautiful, intelligent, influential and amazing legacy.

What Is On Trend Right Now?

What comes to mind for me is: Authenticity. Working with cause. Exploration. President Obama. Rose Quartz. And black. Always black.

What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?

I’ve always had a deep and profound respect for the past, and throughout my careers as both a writer and musician, I’ve often referenced our history for inspiration. This has been especially true lately, as I’ve been specifically inspired to create new content based on our cultural history. So, for me, Black History Month is simply an amplification of that; it’s an opportunity to collectively celebrate and share black culture in ways that we may neglect to year-round (because…life). But in my life and home, Blackness is an almost constant source of pride and influence upon my creativity.

What Is On Trend Right Now?

I think authenticity is always on trend. For me, that translates to surrounding myself with elements that are equal parts personal and polished. I like my living space to reflect my personality, which means creating a home that is playful, sexy and stylish, but is also reverential. Throughout my home, I’ve created galleries of black-and-white imagery of American-American life, including family and icons alike. It’s my personal tribute to my culture, and a constant reminder of my legacy and responsibility.

What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?

Black History Month (which should be a year-round celebration), is a time to connect, discover and acknowledge the accomplishments of the people in our community, both past and present. The stories are sources of inspiration are a good reminder not to be complacent, complain about challenges, or settle for mediocrity. It’s also a time to reflect and think about the legacy we are creating to inspire the next generation. I think about my own accomplishments, and it's great knowing that my work and life are contributing to our history.

What Is On Trend Right Now?

I’m seeing many home products/fashion designers outsourcing manufacturing to various countries in Africa. It’s great to see the continent engaging in manufacturing, as opposed to being solely used as a source of inspiration. The “Made in A specific country in Africa” label is not only preserving arts, but also contributing to the economy and enhancing the reputation of a continent that has been portrayed with so much negativity. I hope this movement inspires more creative entrepreneurs to think outside the box when it's time to manufacture collections.

This year it is an amazing reminder to continue to explore my culinary roots deeper. I grew up in North Carolina, and my grandmother was a huge influence on me at a young age when it came to understanding seasonal ingredients and how to prepare them. In 2016, my goal is to fully embrace the produce and dishes she exposed me to at a young age.  As well as make it a part of my everyday cooking, along with new creative ways to use them.

Chef Casual Dining has really taken off in NYC. People want healthy delicious food served fast. Expect to see many of your favorite chefs launching restaurants built on this concept. My two favorites are both in Brooklyn: Saucy and The Food Sermon.

To me Black History is a time to acknowledge, honor and highlight all the people of historical and present significance that have contributed to humankind.  It is also a time to acknowledge all the small triumphs we have accomplished and focus on a bright, positive present and future.

What Is On Trend Right Now?

Right now, it seems that the 70s and 90s are on trend. Nothing wrong with some beautiful colorful and patterned scarves and culottes.  However, I don't really follow trends. I follow my intuition on what works aesthetically; this means I am always inspired by many different things and my style is always evolving.
