#29BlackTastemakers: Jeanine Hays & Bryan Mason

February 28, 2016

AphroChic began in 2007 – the brainchild of husband-and-wife team Jeanine Hays and Bryan Mason. AphroChic became a place for Jeanine, a former policy attorney, and Bryan, a Ph.D. student, to escape the stresses of work and share their passion for culture and design.

To embody their personal vision of a new kind of design the two coined the phrase, “Modern.Soulful.Style.” – design that embraces culture and the unique admixture of the traditional and the contemporary that helps to define us all.

Jeanine and Bryan are leading experts in home decor and global style, regularly producing written content as well as photo and video shoots for About.com, HGTV, Refinery29, Apartment Therapy and AOL. Jeanine has also participated as an online guest judge for the 2010 season of HGTV’s Design Star. The two are currently IKEA Brand Ambassadörs.

Jeanine and Bryan are the authors of REMIX: Decorating with Culture, Objects and Soul, published by Potter Style in November 2013. The two reside in Brooklyn, New York.

What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?

Black history month is important as a brief opportunity every year for every American to sit back and consider how a tiny portion of the world's population, formed from enslavement and deprived of homeland, culture and language has progressed in just a few centuries to become a major contributor to world culture through its literary, scientific, musical and political accomplishments. It gives us a chance to think about how varied those accomplishments have been and the number of people who contributed to them; to go beyond the names we're used to hearing at this time of year and find the ones that weren't covered in school. Best of all, it serves as a reminder that black history didn't stop in the 60s or 70s but that there are still people making new history every day whether they're doing it as president or as physicists or as artists, designers or other creatives. AphroChic is proud to represent our history and our culture in our products and interior designs while bringing attention to all of us who are making new creative history through our blog posts and video series. We've been thrilled to see the level of activism and social activity from all corners our community this month and hope to see it continue throughout the year. And we will continue to find new ways to celebrate who we, as Black people, are and how we live.

What Is On Trend For You?

We feel like creating interiors that have a personal touch are what people want today.  They want to live in home where the design embraces the cultural and unique admixture of the traditional and contemporary qualities to make a one-of-a-kind home. In short, we think what's on trend is creating a Modern Soulful Styled Home.
