What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?
It means even more unabashed love, celebration, and carefree expression of ourselves individually and collectively. It's also further emphasized the magic and undeniable beauty of black people. Under-the-radar talent from literature to art to design to fashion to film to food are all getting to shine on a larger scale, and in many cases establishing their own platforms on which to do that. To read so many awesome stories about black women establishing their own imprints at publishing houses to black directors and black crew members further putting their stamp on films starring black talent, to black chefs in the Bronx trying to make it a new culinary capital, to more visibility and diversity in tech, to Obama's new Librarian of Congress appointee who is a black woman. It's been one of the most memorable Black History months for me.
What Is On Trend For You?
In terms of retail spaces and shops, concept stores are a really big trend right now. Beautifully curated spaces that operate as retail shops as well as restaurants and venues for pop-up events. They're appearing all over the country, and D.C has its fair share of beautifully curated ones like Maketto and the recently-opened Mulebone, which features carefully sourced vintage clothing and furniture from independent artists, estate sales, and antique shops.
