#28TM: Jeanetta Gonzales

February 20, 2017

Los Angeles-based designer, artist and coach, Jeanetta Gonzales, spreads joy and inspiration through a variety of creative means. She runs a multidisciplinary studio specializing in surface patterns, illustration, lettering and graphic design, creating vibrant work that expresses a signature mix of classic, funky and feminine. Jeanetta's early beginnings studying fine art at UCLA led her to a long career in graphic design, surface pattern design and art direction designing for large brands such as Mattel and Disney. While at Mattel Jeanetta designed the unique branding and packaging for the African American Barbie doll line, So in Style, and later began working on her own where she could spread her wings and showcase her many artistic talents.

Jeanetta is a true people person with a love of sharing her inspirations and knowledge. She thrives when connecting with others and can be found teaching and speaking online, at local colleges and creative conferences as well as coaching artists, providing guidance, accountability and support in their careers and their personal development. She has been featured in publications such as Uppercase Magazine and Artists and Makers Magazine and sites such as Domino.com, The Jungalow and Apartment Therapy and is the co-founder of Heart 2 Art Talk, an online talk show and Facebook community for commercial artists.

What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?

Black history month to me represents a time of reflection, recognition and responsibility. It is a time to celebrate our rich history and share the stories of struggle, triumph, innovation, and creativity. I believe it to be our responsibility to transform our world into a more tolerant and nurturing one - a world that honors the past and energizes us to positively impact our communities and influence culture, resulting in an active, informed, and inspired future generation.

Where Are You Finding Inspiration Today To Design This Year?

This year I am finding inspiration in the rich color palettes I am seeing in home decor, fashion and stationery design. The combo of teals (deep teal to minty green) and pinks (from peachy to salmon) is everything! They are versatile and together convey a touch of retro glam and a sophisticated tropical vibe that lends itself well to many things such as interior design, product design and art. Deep teal really speaks to me. It's a new favorite of mine in the last year. I love it so much I painted a vertical stripe on my studio wall and used it heavily in my work in an art trade show I exhibited in. I want to continue exploring the pinks and teals together more and see where it leads me.
