Reuben Reuel is the founder and creative director of Demestik, a women's clothing brand. Reuben's focus is to create clothes that make women feel good about themselves, sexy, and also modern. Born in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Reuben found his love for fashion in his grandmother's impeccable taste and flamboyant style. As a skilled seamstress, she served as his primary influence and inspiration.
Reuben began his fashion education in 2002 during his junior year of high school later pursuing Fine Arts at Norfolk State University. Upon moving to New York City in 2007, Reuben studied at The Art Institute of New York City subsequently working for independent designers who focused on domestic manufacturing.
Reuben recently relocated from Brooklyn to Saint Louis to be a part of the Saint Louis Fashion Incubator. The fund focuses on giving emerging designers the opportunities and guidance they need to grow their business and the brand.
What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?
It means what it’s meant for me every year, I can do and be whatever I want while simultaneously being proudly black. I am free. I am appreciative of those who fought for my freedom. I want to show my appreciation through my daily actions, through my art, and through how I treat people of all races.
Where Are You Finding Inspiration Today To Design This Year?
I am finding inspiration from women, through my past life in NYC, and my life growing up in Virginia in the Christian church. I also focused on the connections I make with humans. I have been reading the Bible more this year for guiding, so I guess you can say I am inspired by God.
