#28TM: Danielle McKim

February 5, 2019

If you ever met me in person you know that I'm loud, slightly crazy, and deeply in love with design and furniture.  I am a native New Yorker (Long Island specifically), and I moved down south to attend Clemson University in my mid twenties.  After graduating I moved to Charlotte on a whim, and instantly fell in love with this little gem of a city.  Charlotte ignites the creative soul in such a unique way.

My husband (Justin) and I have a beautiful son named Taylor, a silly Great Dane named Charlotte, and a passion for renovating our home that is never quite satisfied! I am also the very proud owner of my brick and mortar business called TUFT.  My business is the manifestation of my out of the box approach to design.  I want people to fall in love with vintage items I have and also play with custom designs that they didn’t realize they could create. I want people to be fearless with pattern and color; and most importantly, I want people to curate a home that reflects their unique style!

What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?

This year I realized for the first time that I have someone that I need to pass on knowledge to: my son.   Taylor is two and although he is too young to understand exactly what I am talking about, I still enjoy planting those seeds of knowledge and exposing him to our history and culture.  There is so much to learn, discuss and reflect on.  The conversation around Black History needs to start now, and I’m proud that I get to do that with my son.

Where Are You Finding Inspiration To Create This Year?

I find inspiration from all around me. We are such a visual society its hard not to be inspired by many different things. Personally, I have been inspired by how I can bring functionality + design together.  2018 trended heavy with minimalist design, and 2019 is moving towards maximalism and I’m all for it!  I love to have a very layered home but I also need it to be functional at the same time. I focus on styling wisely to ensure that these seemingly conflicting goals can co-exist in a home.

my friend Ariene’s home of Dressing Room Interiors is simply amazing.  She styles so well and her space is layered, curated and so unique.
