My name is Ron Ackins, and I'm a freelance illustrator from Philadelphia, Pa. My work in recent history has been comic book related, but I've worked for apparel companies for the majority of my career. I've also worked on character design and storyboards for companies.
Recently, I worked on Marvel Comics titles like Moon Knight and Uncanny X-Men. I am currently working on the first issue of my character, Lancaster Blue set to be featured in a monthly anthology entitled Island, published by Image Comics.
What Does Black History Month Mean To You This Year?
Honestly, I'm a bit indifferent to Black History Month. Aside from it being confined to the shortest month of the year, I think it has most of us Black people in the bad habit of only honoring our rich history and legacy when February rolls around; similar to how certain people only want to be in relationships when its cold outside and single and free during the Spring and Summer. I believe that a huge part of our healing amongst the diaspora is to make studying and honoring our history and ancestors a lifestyle. A lot of the problems we face today as Black people have already been solved by our ancestors.
Where Are You Finding Inspiration To Create This Year?
I find inspiration all over the place. Sometimes it may come from a song or simply riding public transportation and observing nature or people. Sometimes, like today, it could come from other artist's work that I stumble upon online. At times watching videos of other artists drawing and painting will get me ready to start my day creating as well.
